Requirements to become a systems administrator?

Every job ad I see for systems engineers, or sys admins is different. I have never seen the same two job ads, and I believe I have counted over 60 or 70 different possible products and technologies you need to know combines. Are you telling me in order to apply for these jobs you have to know Cisco, Citrix, Linux, Unix, Windows, VOIP, Programming, Sharepoint, ISA, SCCM, Oracle, SQL, SAP, etc. . . ?!?! I work in the I. T. field and work with top end guys that don’t have a quarter of this stuff. I’m trying to advance my career, but don’t know where to start because each of these can take months if not years to become good at or learn. I. T. is ridiculous and expectations are nearly impossible as i’ve met guys with 30 years experience that don’t know everything. I really don’t care to learn linux or Cisco as I don’t use it in my daily job and i’m not going get a bunch of certs that I will forget, so how th heck can I become competitive out there without having to know EVERYTHING???? Please advise.

Can I get Skype Pro on my windows mobile 6 phone?

Im getting on AT&T next week and im getting the AT&T Tilt. Instead of waisting money on minutes would Skype Pro work on the Tilt with a speedy 3G connection? Skype Pro gives you unlimited landline calling and mobile phone calling well actually 10,000 minutes. Will the Voip calling work with the Tilt? Am I even able to download Skype Pro on the Tilt? If anyone knows a program like that which would work on the Tilt similar to Skype Pro please let me know : )

Bad VoiP connection between Korea and Seattle. ?

I am studying in Seoul, South Korea using Tbroad through Dongdaemun Cable Networks. My girlfriend lives in Seattle, Washington using Comcast. She just moved locations within Seattle, both Comcast, but now we have a terrible connection using Skype, Windows Live Messenger, or Google Video. Sometimes it’ll be decent for a bit, then major static and jitter and whatnot. I have no problems contacting others around the globe using any program. I used PingTest. net and got Bs for connections to California, but a D for connecting to Seattle. Is this just a problem with Seattle internet, and is there a way to get around this? Any special settings I can try? I have updated versions of all my applications, updated drivers and whatnot. . .

    Interesting VoIP problem. ?

I’ve unwillingly become the network admin/engineer for a local company. I did all of the cabling in their new office, built the patch panels, etc. I built the entire network from scratch. They are using a remote VoIP service for their PBX. An EdgeWater box is functioning as the gateway for the VoIP network. It is connected to a standard Westell DSL modem with a static IP. Normal data connections are run through a separate DSL line, on a separate network. No problems currently. A few of the phones started acting up recently, one worse than the rest. They are randomly dialing large numbers of 8′s, going blank, and seemingly returning to normal. At times, they will not make or receive calls. Right now, the worst offender is stuck “OBTAINING IP” after I reset it to factory. I found out that just before this started, they were building a few walls in their warehouse. One of the workers apparently severed all power to the switch and server closet while attempting to put in a window. I have checked out everything in the switch closet. All hardware is functioning correctly. There are no problems with any of the cabling. Everything is now on battery backups with clean power. The switch that runs the VoIP phones was on a battery backup before the power interruption. No surge there. I’m about to replace one of the phones with a working phone from my office, just to see if that fixes it. Ideas on what this could be?They’re Cisco 7940Gs.

How do I go from voip to land line (programming)?

Hi,I want to write a little app for my computer that is a very simple voip application. I don’t want all the bells and whistles of skype or anything, and I just want to do this as a learning project. I want to use C to bring up a dialog window requesting a number to call. I then click call, and it calls the number and connects using my speakers and microphone. I will probably use Asterisk, which is an open source VOIP server program. I understand the whole concept of voip to voip, but how would I go about getting from voip to land line? That’s what I have the hardest time grasping. I have a feeling that would need to use some type of switching service? I would prefer to do this for free, but a small charge would be ok. ONCE AGAIN, I DO NOT WANT SKYPE! this is a programming project and I want to learn about voip. I realize skype has an api, but I like Asterisk’s better so don’t even mention skype or anything else. Thanks!

Which is best: Nokia E71, Samsung Blackjack 2, HTC Fuze, Blackberry Curve 8900? And best GSM carrier?

Need VoIP, great battery life, and international service (my belief is that no matter WHERE you go, you’ll always find Nokia shops, but sometimes you’ll find other stuff in capitals, but not always. )Also, what are some shortcomings of these phones? I hear the E71 is great overall, but has a terrible camera at night. Balance with price / cost. What are the OUTSTANDING features of these phones that make them better than the rest in your opinion? As far as Carriers and Coverage goes: which has the best plans balanced vs. cost, best coverage, least dropped calls, best audio clarity, etc. Back to PHONES:Need good audio clarity, a LOUD speakerphone, and a LOUD alarm, as well. GOOD MUSIC OUTPUT A MUST! I was thinking of getting an iPhone, but I hear the HTC Fuze is even better! Is the sound great too?Great OS with good apps and games a big plus. Will be traveling like mad and using VoIP internationally. (Personally, I think Windows Mobile works easiest with work apps, etc. , but I haven’t used the others. ) OS MUST be stable. The OS MUST support Skype or VoIP and Instant Messaging with Yahoo and others. Full GPS Functionality and ease of use. GOOD INTERNATIONAL maps and local businesses too. International Tech Support? Nokia wins hands down, unless others are good. HTC is from Taiwan, and Blackberry is from the USA. Samsung is from Korea. A bit of ruggedness is a good thing when it’s a laptop-replacement used overseas while traveling. 3G optional, but must have HSDPA or EDGE. Also, some phones (like the Nokia E71) is not available in the US with a data plan with a carrier like T-mobile or AT&T, but must be bought separately in its entirety! That’s an extra outlay of cash, though not a big problem, *IS* a consideration! Why not get a $200 discount with a 2-year contract? Please let me know who the carriers are with which phones too, that’s important!Thanjks!

    How does Astreisk work?

Hello, I need help setting up Asterisk in the following scenario:There are two phone lines with two different numbers, and 4 phone sets, each of them connected to both the lines. We want to set up a phone-system using Asterisk. (or a similar software solution). What equipments do we need?We will have to install the Asterisk software, so obviously we need a computer, which we have. However, it seems Asterisks doesn?t support Windows, where as our computers are Windows based. What should be done in this case?Let?s say we have been able to install the Asterisk software, by using a linux computer. Now that we have the computer with the needed software installed, what should be the next step?Currently we have regular land phone lines, and not voip lines. We do not intend to subscribe to any voip phone line either. Given the above scenario, what equipments/tools will we need to set up Asterisk for our regular phone lines, to facilitate a phone-system?Thanks!Just for clarification, when I say Asterisk, i meant the following software:http://www. asterisk. org/

I just bought a WiFi enabled Dell Axim51v, with Windows mobile 5. 0. How do I protect myself against viruses?

I got the unit primarily to use VoIP, which won’t do me much good if my a** is exposed due to viruses. . Btw- ViaTalk (www. viatalk. com) is offering 2 years of VoIP connectivity for just 200 bucks! They don’t coverage everywhere like Vonage, but I think they have the best overall package.

How do i disable a firewall i dont have?

i disabled windows firewall and all possible programs that could have firewalls, yet all P2P and torrent programs think i have a firewall enabled, maybe its my router or modem, can anyone tell me how to fix this? Or even how to detect what firewall i may have? I already disabled my router firewall by the way and went to portforward. com and created access ports for my programs, after this, it usually fixed the NAT but not this time, it just happened out of the blue. So i dont know where the firewall is coming from, all else i can say is that i have verison dsl and skyrocket voip. THANX

is Apple’s iPhone better or Motorola’s Razr Maxx V6?

I am not a buisness man so I could care less about any phone’s ability to run “third party apps”, VoIP, Windows Mobile, or Smart-phone capabilities blah blah. I won $850 in Texas lotto and I’m willing to spend that on a phone with multimedia features. Razr maxx looks good but I doubt the screen to be as good as iPhone’s. Can U plz help me make a choice? How can I prevent connectivity problems while behind a router?

I am running Yahoo! Messenger 8 on Windows XP. The same issue happened with older versions as well. I maintain agood connection when I am connected directly to my modem. Once I installed my VoIP phone, which included a LinkSys router, I now have issues with Yahoo! frequently disconnecting and reconnecting me. I have tried changing my proxy settings from “No Proxies” to “Firewall with no proxies” and it has not helped. Does anyone have any other viable suggestions?

Built in microphone doesn’t work after updating the OS (Windows 7)?

I have an Acer Aspire 5520 that came with Windows Vista and a built in microphone. While using Vista, I used the microphone several times and it worked fine. One day Vista crashed and I decided to use the opportunity to install Windows 7. Now, the microphone ONLY works with the default Windows recorder. It does not work with Audacity, Microsoft Messenger, X-Fire, or any other VoIP clients. At one time I figured that maybe I needed to redownload the drivers. However, checking Acer’s website, there is a list of driver’s available for my Acer model, but there are no microphone drivers. In fact, checking Device Manager, I can’t locate the current drivers installed. In the “Sound” control panel, under the “Recording” tab, there are three devices listed: 2 Microphones and 1 “Line-In”. One microphone, which is set as the default, shows to be the front mic jack on my computer. The other microphone shows to be an internal jack, so I am assuming this is the built in microphone. I have tried all three as defaults and toggled with pretty much every option in the properties for each, and to no avail – The microphone still won’t work for any program that isn’t Windows Recorder. It’s probably worth noting that when the microphone shown to be the front mic jack on the computer is set as the default, even though nothing is plugged in, Windows Recorder still works. There’s still the possibility that it is a driver problem, but I do not know what kind of drivers this mic requires, and I have no way to update them with the Device Manager since they appear to not be listed there. Any help is highly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I want to be able to use my computer as a normal telephone. I’m not talking about VoIP. I want to plug a normal phone line into my computer and use my computer to dial on my landline and use it as if it were a phone. I don’t have a Windows computer. my Operating System is debian/GNU Linux (5. 0)so, anyway. . . I was just wondering how I could do this. . I’m pretty sure it can be done. . if you need more information just let me know. I’ll add more details.

If I have broadband VOIP, can I access the internet with a dial up ISP?

I am considering getting a broadband connection and a VOIP service and eliminating my land line. From what I can see, most of the things I want (cable internet, movie downloads) require Windows Operating System and my current computer has SUSE Linux Operating System. I plan on buying another computer with Win OS, but would like to access the internet on this other computer for shopping and financial dealings (because I feel more secure with it) The cable internet allows 20 hours a month of dial up access, can I dial up through the VOIP lines as I do now using the telephone line? (I would have the new computer attached to the broadband connection, but still want internet access on this computer. ) I would bet that Linux OS could be massaged to overcome some of the system requirements for Window OS but I am technically illiterate and feel this would be my favored option (if able)
