inactive security system – no display on control keypad, can it be enabled !?

Hello, we moved into a house some time back and have these 2 inactive Protection One control pads (2 of them, one downstairs, one upstairs). They show no sign of life (power). There are about 5-6 windows sensor and 2 motion sensors all wired up. The decal says “Digitec”. Is there a way to somehow re-enable the security system, would I then be able to use the security system as an unmonitored home security system – which will just alert us and scare the intruder trying to break in. BTW, we do not have a regular phone line and use VOIP and cell phones. Thank you for your time and response. Thanks, no manual, house was REO, sold as is. Digitec seems out of business or bought by some other big player. Possibly a security person who does this for a living can give a quick “yes, it can be re-enabled – here’s how” or “no, it cannot be done, requires service to turn on”

How do I configure laptop -> wireless router -> cable modem?

OK. . . I know how to configure Netgear router. . . went to IP Address in browser, set the password. . . etc. etc. Been there and done that. Internet access was fine for about a week. Then, poof. . . Internet access was gone. My laptop can see the wireless router and can connect to it. So the problem is with the cable modem. However, I am receiving the cable television signal, and I am able to watch television, which is confusing me. I would have thought that if my internet was gone, I would not be able to receive the cable tv signal. (BTW, I have the coaxial set up, and everything is properly connected. ) The other thing is my telephone uses VOIP, and so I do not have telephone service either. OK, so I contacted my technician, who texted me a 12 digit code, with which I had no idea what to do. So, I called the technician, and he said he left an instruction document in my Favorites folder. Apparently, that 12 digit code enables the cable modem internet connection to be activated somehow. I said “Great. ” But, I had forgotten that my laptop crashed, and I had to do a complete restore, which meant I lost most of my files, including the documents in Favorites. Does anyone have a clue about what I am talking about? Does anyone know what this 12 digit code is, how it is used, and where I might enter it? I know about configuring wireless connection, but configuring wireless connection through Windows Vista does not have anything to do with the cable modem. Any ideas?Thanks. Oh, and before you guys start telling me to contact my cable/internet provider, I have my reasons for not doing so, just yet. Thanks, again.

what is the best skype phone or a good price?

I have a skype package that is a really good deal and lets me call all over. I bought a cheap VOIP phone and it’s worked ok, but now it just keep messing up. There are so many skype phones, some that are Wi-Fi, some that connect into the router and some that connect into the pc (that’s the kind I have now). I want one that isn’t too much more the $100 and has good sound quality and works with windows 7. I prefer one that doesn’t have to hook into the pc. please send links to phone suggestions. Using Speakers as Microphone or something?

How can I transmit audio to other person with Voice over IP (VoIP) without having an actual microphone? Say I want to play a song and want the other to listen to it, so more like my speakers act as a microphone. . . . Do I need a 3rd party software? Or can that be done simply through changing some ports? I’m using windows 7. Thanks. For example, I want to play songs on MSN and let others listen to them just as I would speak from a Microphone, instead of my voice, I want the song (MP3) to be played as output.

Good thing ’bout the whole thing is that i can undercut. . . . anyone. 25-50 bucks can get ya a clean harddrive, a backup, and maybe a lesson or two on how to respect your computer, nyah. And maybe some customization, nya nya. BestBuy is like what? 100 bucks for a backup. . . . ? Yuh, just for jpegs and docs (have experience with that). All ’bout who ya know, nya. That kinda business, nya. Looked into bitcoin mining, but at this point it’s almost a waste of time unless you have a rig. My experience. . . . Nothing to do with the Apple operating systems. How to monitor computer/devices on a business network for abuse of Bandwidth and IP Registrations?

I am working in an office building running on T1 through a Cisco Router. We have many computers and even more VOIP telephones. On a few occasions, there were clients that were sharing resources and abusing bandwidth. Eventually they crashed the router and knocked down the internet for the entire building. The router we are using is leased by the service provider and access was not granted to us to manage it. I know i’ts ip but I cannot access it’s settings page through my browser. I am not an IT but acting as one on this project. I need to find a program or service that can simply and easily list all the devices on the network and display their usage of IP connections and total bandwidth. A big plus would be something that can limit both to a reasonable number / amount per client. I have looked through a few here and there. I tried Spiceworks but that only gives you the IP, MAC, and Name of a device at the most. Depending on the device it may show more such as manufacturer, serial number, OS, etc. Sadly it does not show any usage information about bandwidth and IP addresses its connecting to. I heard about websense and may consider using it. The only issue with this program is that it requires a host machine running on Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008. I basically have a computer running on everything but those two. Please any suggestions? I need something that I can eveluate right now. I do NOT have access to other computer’s or devices on the network because again, this is an office building with tennants using their own computers. Thanks in advance!

What is the best choice for a home wireless router given the following requirements?

I need to find a better router for my home, and it needs to address the following :1) The router should have the most recent standards (gigabit wired, wireless n, etc)2) I have an additional 6 port switch I can attach for added wired connections, so the number of ports is not critical. 3) I need to be able to assign static IP addresses based on device MAC. 4) I will be streaming audio and video data over the wireless – sometimes multiple streams simultaneously. 5) The construction of my residence includes a lot of aluminum studs. The signal strength must be STRONG. My existing Linksys only broadcasts at about 40% signal strength. 6) VOIP will travel through the router7) The router should function as a firewall. Devices that will connect to the network will be : Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) computers, printers, TIVO boxes, Home audio equipment (Blue-ray DVD, Receiver), Android smart phones, a network storage device, and a VOIP service box. Can anyone suggest the best hardware for this case?

Why is my computer freezing/locking up for 20+ seconds when installing or running some programs?

I use a Dell XPS420 that is about 20 months old, nVidia 9800 GT, with Windows Vista 32 everything is up to date as of 10-25-2010 and I have been experiencing these issues for about a year now. Whenever I do any of the following functions, my computer will freeze for maybe 20 seconds:1. Signing on to Ventrilo (VoIP chat program). 2. Compiling a somewhat large C++ program including GDK libraries. 3. Installing an update to online video games through a client, or a Windows update. I am sure that there are other situations where the lockup will happen as well. I can still move my cursor, but I cannot interact with any windows, and if I click more than 6 or 7 times, the cursor will freeze and my PC will beep. After 20 seconds, all functionality is restored. When installing an update, the system will experience the freeze periodically throughout the duration. Excluding the Visual C++ thing, the only commonality seems to be the use of a dedicated client, but I do not experience any issues when using a simple browser or anything. I am not sure if Visual C++ actually uses any networking resources at all. Does anyone know of any diagnostic tools that I can use to try and pinpoint the root of the error? Or has anyone had a similar error and is able to provide a fix?Thanks in advance!

As simply as I can state, I had 2 old PCs (Windows XP) wired via Ethernet cables to Netgear router into my ISP’s VOIP which has a Linksys and Westell setup. Wanted to share a Brother laser printer by Ethernet cable so both PCs would print via this printer, so I plugged an Ethernet cable from Brother to 3rd WAN port of Netgear router. The Linksys part of the VOIP setup crashed when I tried to print from the Netgear printer. Please advise. The Brother printer and also a Canon inkjet (but want to limit it’s use, cause it eats ink) printer I have can be set up for either wired or wireless. Am a newbie to this. Please advise. Thank you.

Is it possible to create a virtual 56k modem?

Hello,What I mean, if there is any software that can login to a VOIP account (through SIP protocol) and be like a virtual 56k modem. I want to use it as a fax modem for the Fax and Scan feature in Windows Vista and above. So if I send a fax letter, it will use the voip account to send the fax. And if someone sends a fax to the number of the voip account, it will be received as a fax that was really dialed and came in through a real line with a 56k modem. If it’s not possible – is there any other software that can send and receive fax through voip with SIP protocol?Thanks in advance!The first reply said that I have to check with my SIP carrier if he supports faxing. Port Forwarding on Vonage device wont work please help?

Hi, Thanks in advance for any help. Windows XP homeVonage Device for voip: Motorola VT 2142Im using Bitcomet/Utorrent and getting slow speeds. ports are not open. I narrowed my problem of getting slow download/upload speeds down to my vonage modem/router device. When I unplug it and just use my cable modem, it goes fast and the ip or connection thing is not blocked. Once I attach the vonage device it shows the port is not open and cant connect. Now, I went to the site www. portforward. com, they have a guide on it, I went and did exactly everything they said. Many times might I add, and I didnt make any mistakes. I found the port number, added it to the port forward options in the vonage device, saved and checked. Still the same. Why is it set to foward the port but not doing it? thank for the help

I was contacted via Windows Live Messenger by a “Sgt. Williams” from the FBI, he even had a . gov email address. We had a short conversation about me trying to hack VOIP servers. A few minutes later he logged off. It’s probably a hoax, however what is the punishment of Impersonating an officer of the law? And I did email my local FBI office. I wonder what they can do about it. The servers were NOT government servers.

I’m looking at a computer for school and i have a super computer tower at my house but not a laptop. i was comparing between the hp Pavilion dm4x Entertainment PC series and the Dell xps 15z and the dell is about 1200 all said and done and the hp is 900 for comparable build. SmartPhones, Pocket PCs. . . Is there much difference and which are the most convenient?

I have only just started seriously looking to understand these products because of the potential for using VoIP on them – Skype has just released a version for Windows Mobile. But when I Googled “smartphone” I was flooded with results, and frankly, I’m not sure how to start whittling down the choices to find the best one for me. I know I need the following (or at least, I think I do):* Windows-based, mostly due to the Skype software. * A QWERTY keyboard. * A keyboard that’s not overly-fiddly. * Relatively small, so it’s not *too* different to a mobile phone. Any thoughts or suggestions? Also, I’m in Australia – many of the sites and articles I was able to find weren’t relevant to me. So if there are people who know of Aussie options, that’d be great.

Will we ever see a new version for OS X?

We Mac users were extremely appreciative when you released beta 1 for OS X last year. This excitement has now turned into exasperation. It amazes me that a company as rich and as large as Yahoo only hired 2 Mac developers for this project. One of the developers, Tristan O’Tierney, recently quit out of frustration. Apple has made a huge comeback and bu some estimates is around 15% of the home computer market after you subtract business PC’s. With the iPhone, new iPods, and the release of OS X 5 this trend will continue. Yahoo, enough is enough. You have the money, go out and spend the money to hire enough developers to restart the stagnant OS X messenger. And if by some miracle you are listening, don’t give us a version with half the features. We want photo sharing, voice, VoiP, real video conferencing, and all the other goodies long available on the Windows version. An update to let us know what is happening would also be appreciated. Will we ever see beta 2 or a final release?
